Some forwards are smart enough to realize who they're forechecking on and know how to take advantage of certain dmen in knowing what they're going to do.
Vessey had to have known or at least ought to have known that Gudas was going to plaster him against the boards. To ensure he draws the penalty, hard forechecking, slightly over-skate the puck, turn face to the glass and numbers to the hitter and boom, penalty drawn.
