Then the societal issues, they see radical Islamic terrorism as a threat, (he plays to that), and illegal immigration as a threat (also plays to that). These are not issues or fears Trump made up, but is simply responding to the natural fears average American's already have.
Acting as if fears or skepticism (take either the above examples, or even the interracial marriage example given) is rational or fact based is dismissing how the human brain works. People are fearful of change and the unknown. It is not looking for facts. It can only work past these issues when the mind realises the issue it is not cause for fear or worry, just like interracial marriage and gay marriage have become. Just like every major societal change.....ever.
Democrats and Trump's detractors think giving facts or attacking him is going to make people change their mind about him (and by extension) these issues, when in reality, supporters' concerns are being perfectly catered to, and arguing only strengthens their resolve (see:Anti-vaxxers).

Who thinks that? Why would anyone want to try to reason with a hardcore Trump supporter? You might as well talk to a brick wall. There's a reason Clinton basically called a good chunk of his supporters complete write offs, because they are from a Democrat's perspective. Clinton is never going to get the support of someone who gets fired up at the idea of banning Muslims from entering the country or building a wall along the Mexican border.
Democrats are attacking Trump and highlighting his inadequacies in order to get the support of swing voters in key states. That and because he's the worst and most unqualified major party candidate for president in the near 250 year history of the country which is why you're seeing some moderate Republicans attack him as well.
People always suspected that a certain percentage of the country on the right would vote Republican no matter how bad and unqualified the candidate, I think they're just surprised to actually see it in action to this degree which is why he's getting so much attention. But you don't win the Presidency if that's all the support you get. Democrats know this and that's why they're not going to waste their time trying to attract his hardcore supporters.
Maybe swing voters are immune to reason too, but so far their support of Trump has pretty much moved in lockstep with his high and low points of the campaign. When he has embarrassed himself and put his foot in his mouth they've moved to Clinton; when he has generally shut up and let Clinton hang herself, some of them have moved back to him. If Clinton wasn't the 2nd most unlikable candidate for President in US history this race would've probably been over long ago.
