Playing on the fears of people terrified of a future where white people are not the majority. Trump had zero platform for people to vote for, other than xenophobic and nationalistic narratives. These same narratives are the reason why newspapers that haven't endorsed a Democrat in a century are now lining up behind Clinton. They see how Trump won and the danger he poses to the country.
