Being in the US for the sake of being in the US isn't real IMO. Being under the radar (for certain players), or maybe tax advantages, are real factors.

Canadian teams make up 30 per cent of the franchises in the league. Only 10 per cent of star American players play on Canadian teams. Seems like a pretty clear disparity to me.
There are a variety of reasons why NHL stars prefer to play in the U.S. Climate, proximity to family (for Americans), taxes, media attention, ease of air travel (direct flights).
