I don't see how Gaudreau can see value in the risk/reward equation in that. He is going to decline a 7 year/$49 million or 8 year/$56 million contract with an opportunity to make a likely $20 million on his next contract. So he leaves a guaranteed $49-$56 million with a likely 15-20 million on the backend to take $19 million now. His best case scenario is he wins the Hart trophy and the NHL continues to thrive, and he gets a 7/52 contract then?
Basically, he's taking $19 now with a chance to make $50-$60 later vs $50-60 now with a chance to make 15-20 later.
It's not like he's a baseball player where there's a chance he could cash in with a $400 million by keeping short term deals. There just isn't much salary difference in today's nhl between a top line player and a superstar.
The risk in putting off the big guarantee is substantial. He's a good bet to succeed but no 23 year old is a sure thing to stay at that level. Injuries are always a risk. The salary cap will have substantial downward pressure from the RSN bubble popping one day.
