This is so important to remember.
2 years ago he chose to give Calgary control over the next 7 years of his playing career for 1 RFA year of hockey (might even be just 1 year of entry level salary).
Nothing since then would have made that a negative experience. It's a pure money issue. It will settle out shortly. Without arbitration or offer sheet rights the only pressure point was training camp and because he got to play the World Cup as training camp the training camp point is that great.
So the pressure point is regular season games. This was really
no reason for him to sign before now.
