Literally everyone should want Trouba. There are only two questions: can you give up assets that the Jets will want, and does Trouba want to sign with you any more than he does the Jets.
The Jets could potentially reap a return of good, experienced players. If they do that, they will instantly be in contention. I hear the whole "trade him for another young guy", maybe Nuge, but this is a team with Mark Scheifele already there and Kyle Connor coming in, they just acquired Marko Dano last year, and have Quinton Howden and Burmistrov for depth. They're pretty well set for young C's. Then there's 28 year old Mathieu Perrault who was just signed. Bryan Little's only 28 years old. and has another couple years on his deal. Unless someone's going out with Trouba, they're probably not taking a C back.
At G, this is Pavelec's last year, and they have Hutchinson and Hellebucyk in waiting, two guys who have a decent shot at becoming full fledged #1's. So they might ship Pavelec's deal out with Trouba, but they don't really need to.
On the wings? Laine is coming in and Wheeler's 29 and signed for 3 more years. Joel Armia just started to show glimpses of his potential last season. On left, Nikolaj Ehlers is one of my favourite young players in the league (really wish Team Europe had taken him) and Adam Lowry is probably going to be a good bottom six winger for a while - he's only 23. And out of necessity, some of the natural centers, probably Dano, will end up on LW, as he has before. But that seems like their weak spot at F.
So yeah, Trouba for Hall might have made just a bit of sense...
