A lot depends on the circumstances. To put it into human terms, imagine this was a 10 year old mentally ######ed kid (sorry if that isn't the PC term.) The dog was likely coaxed, and I can just see the way the dog looked at the people who did this. The dog likely had that goofy dog smile that asked "are we going to play? Are we going to have fun?"
Same thing if the ######ed kid in my other example was approached by two older boys and was asked "we're going to the park to play ball- want to come along?" Then the kid gets abused, or in this case tortured. That would spark a similar outrage for me.
I think that would make you cringe just as much. Because what bugs me the most is not that a dog died, but somebody took what was likely a fun loving happy go lucky critter and left him with the dying impression that humans are aresholes and that he wasn't loved.
