No, but it helps a LOT. Clearing the front of the net is probably the biggest part of the power play, and guys like Brodie and Russell are never going to be very effective at that. Tying up a stick is all you could really expect those guys to do against guys like Tarasenko and Lucic.

There's a lot that goes into PKing, we're not disagreeing here. And maybe a special teams specialist 3rd pair that gets extremely sheltered at even strength is the right choice. But that shouldn't be based around physicality and shoving gloves into faces. It should be based around.... whether a player is a very good penalty killer and someone you have confidence in that player to be on a PK against Tarasenko and Lucic.
