I'm not arguing that Gaudreau should make $8.5 million dollars. I'm saying the Gio cap would be a stupid way for a GM to handcuff themselves needlessly.
The argument could be made that Brodie, at the time of signing his deal, was not better than Gio. If he had signed the deal the next year it would look quite a bit different IMO.
It's not a good comparison. Forwards tend to make more money, regardless of who's more important.
