I hate to use retrospect - but it's never, ever a good idea to spend all your money on bottom-half-of-lineup players. You're better off not spending at all. You only have to make the cap floor and you don't need to sign anything longer than one year deals to do that.

Entirely correct. It's death by a thousands cuts. A number of missteps that add up. The Flames have been poor at extracting value from the 4th line and the 5/6 pairing. At least a lot of that money comes off the books next off-season.
