I know a bunch of teachers and a few university profs. From what I gather, the teachers appear to have a way better deal. Research and funding pressures plus lack of long-term positions are some of the negatives.
As for the earlier posts on MD's - I think family physicians do well, but after all their overhead is deducted (nurse, reception, accounting, leased space) they are not even in the same ballpark as certain specialists that work primarily out of hospitals.
I think dentists blow everyone out of the water in terms of earnings vs. hours worked.
