Tough one Northendzone, I feel for your son. Give him some time to process what has happened, hopefully he will realize he plays because he loves the game and not because of what team he plays on. At the end of the day that is what matters most and what will keep you playing.
The whole elite tryout is so different than community evaluations, it is 100% up to the coach of each particular team as to what he/she wants their team to look like. Unfortunately they don't have to justify their decisions to anyone really, and there is no appeal process. How many first year vs. second year players they want to carry at the AA level may have played into it.
