No, that's not what you do because its not what you have to do. The CBA is specifically set up in such a way that guys don't get paid what they're actually worth until UFA. It structurally enables teams to pay RFAs less than they are actually worth. To not utilize that is poor management, and frankly, dumb. Harsh when you're sympathetic towards the player involved (as even I am), yes. But still dumb.
If you don't like it, take on the CBA. Don't take on the Flames for playing by its rules.
