I think you are slightly overemphasizing the Toronto factor on Matthews marketability, but even if your not, I'd suggest the reason why a player is marketable or well known is pretty irrelevant.

It think Matthews is on the team because the management believes he's a top 12 forward, and with my limited knowledge I'm inclined to agree. You were the one that suggested showcasing young NHL talent as a factor. If that is the case, the reason why Matthews is easily one of the most marketable U23 players on the planet is kind of irrelevant, all that matters is that he is.
