Well, there are two debates in one here: young stars who are negotiating on deals which combine RFA and UFA years and the argument that Treliving overpaid UFAs.
While Treliving may have overpaid for Brower, the fact is that the contract was what was going on in the market. Same for Engelland and Raymond. The UFAs who are now on PTOs are the other side of that market - some GMs aer deciding that they'd rather pay ELC dollars to ELC players.
With Gaudreau, while I think he's better than Tarasenko, he's not THAT much better. And he's had two great years, but he wants top 20 UFA money. That's pretty unprecedented.
