The cap has nearly doubled when it was first introduced.
Ovechkin signed 9.5M when the cap was 56.7M...17% of the cap. Crosby and Malkin signed 8.7M for about 15% of the cap. Even Kane's 6.3M contract was about 11% of the cap for its first year. Vanek signed an offersheet that was worth over 14% of the cap.
Ekblad's 'massive' 7.5M RFA cap hit will take up about 10% of the cap when it goes into effect next year.
Monahan's contract is 8.5% of the cap, nearly the exact same percentage Penner got from the Oilers offersheet...
