Default GAME 11: Labour Day Classic Battle of Alberta Rematch

GAME TIME: Saturday, September 10th @ 5:00pm
Commonwealth Stadium
Televised:TSN, ESPN3

Labour Day Classic Rematch. Calgary Stampeders won the 1st part of the Labour Day Classic: Battle of Alberta edition on Monday 45-24. Stamps(8-1-1, 1st place in West) dominated the game in all 3 facets against the Eskimos(5-5, 4th place in the West). Stamps offense started fast with Bo Levi Mitchell connecting for 53 yards pass to Marquay McDaniel but unfortunately they couldn’t score a TD on that series. Stamps defense on the other hand pretty much shut down the twin Derel Walker and Adarius Bowman. On top it all they shut down Mike Reilly to only 219 yards passing all day, one of the lowest output for Mike Reilly this season.

Edmonton Eskimos won last year’s Labour Day Classic rematch 27-16.

OFFENSE:

QB Bo Levi Mitchell (25 for 32 380 yards 2 TD 1 INT) started off well connecting for 53 yards on his first pass of the game. In this game, Mitchell was on fire and he is starting to show that he is the best QB in the CFL this season so far. RB Jerome Messam finally had a huge game this season. He had a so-so first half but dominated in the 2nd especially in the 4th quarter when he scored 2 TD, the last one was a 47 yards rushing TD. Messam ended up rushing 18 times for 110 yards with 2 TD and also caught 6 passes for 49 yards.

Bakari Grant showed why Calgary Stampeders wanted to sign him in the off-season as a free agent. Grant was pretty impressive scoring 1 TD and caught 5 passes for 95 yards. Anthony Parker(3 for 8 yards) who scored the other TD pass from Mitchell. Marquay McDaniel who caught the first Stamps pass of the game ended up catching 4 times for 67 yards. Davaris Daniels is making Dickenson decision in putting Joe West back to the lineup was very impressive again catching 4 times for 57 yards. No words on whether Joe West will be back in the lineup for the rematch yet as of today.

Offensive Line did not surrender a quarterback sack again last week. Stamps OLine hasn’t given up a sack since Week 8. Not bad for a group missing some key OLinemen. The versatile Spencer Wilson replaced Pierre Lavertu as a centre last game. Lavertu is questionable again for Saturday’s rematch but Dan Federkeil might be ready to play. Ucambre Williams started off getting beat by Odell Willis early in the game nut bounced back and totally made Willis a non-factor last game. Not hearing Odell Willis name much means Williams did a great job matching against one of the toughest DLineman in the CFL.

DEFENSE:

Another great game by the Stamps defense. They only given up 82 points in the last 5 games but it could have been a lot less than that. Secondary shut down the Walker and Bowman last game and the DLine and LB crew pressured QB Mike Reilly all night and made him run around and throw some errant passes. Reilly ended up completing 23 passes on 36 attempts for 219 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT. He also rushed 7 times for 46 yards and scored 1 TD. LB Joe Burnett, DE Frank Beltre, DT Micah Johnson and LB Deron Mayo all had one QB sack.

Brandon Smith led the defense with 7 tackles followed by MLB Taylor Reed and DB Ciante Evans with 5 each. Defense need to repeat their performance from Monday on the rematch this Saturday.

SPECIAL TEAM:

Another good performance by the Special Team coverage shutting down the Eskimos returner. Coverage team is starting to impress me with their discipline game and aggressive coverage. Special tem used to be the weakest link for the Stamps but not lately.

Returner Roy Finch finally hit the pay dirt last game. Finch first bobbled the ball then pick it up and ran the ball for 85 yards to score a TD. Finch was not perfect though as he seems to fell asleep late in the first half giving up an unnecessary single point on Grant Shaw’s punt. Overall, he had a monster game returning punt 4 times for 111 yards 1 TD and 3 kickoff returns fr 81 yards.

K Rene Paredes continued his successful FG streak to 31. He went perfect 3 for 3 last game. El Matador own the record for successful FG streak with 39. As you recall, the streak would have ended against Montreal when Bowman blocked his 30th FG attempt late in the game but the ball did not pass the line of scrimmage so the streak stays alive. Paredes is playing his 100th game this Saturday.

GO STAMPS GO!!!!!
