That's a good question - There was an extension put on the house in the eighties - window stamp says 84 - I think the deck would have been built around then maybe so approx 30 years.
The top was all cedar that was left to die in the sun and the joist were double laminated fir I think. So basically the water got Inbetween the joists and rotted them out. It was so bad I probably could have done the demo with a spoon.
The old upper section that no longer exists was a hack and scab job. I had to put in 8" of soil to correct the grade so it wasn't diving straight into a window well for the basement bedroom. (This window well was under the old deck).
