Similar to the poster above, myself and my closest friends were raised that way too, so it must definitely be a cultural thing (Eastern European).

There are other valuable things you learn to do living on your own. Living within a budget, buying groceries, cooking, paying bills, doing laundry, keeping a place clean.
Again, I find it quite interesting that women move out on their own at a younger age than men. Young men tend to be coddled by their mothers, especially in more traditional cultures. The problem is when one of those guys has to learn how to do all that domestic stuff once he's 30 years old and married - especially if it's to a woman who doesn't come from a traditional culture.
