I realize that he can't go on LTIR until the season starts...but I also understand teams can be over the cap (by 10% I think?) right up until season starts.

So could they:
- Sign Russell on August 30th
- Go through all the regular motions of training camp through Sept / Oct
- Put Smid on LTIR opening day
- Satisfy the NHL's salary cap on opening day

We also have $3M in bonus cushion and will likely have $1M of true Cap Space after JG signs. Hell -> maybe Johnny doesn't sign until after the season starts and Smid is IR'd ! (Let's hope not!)

IMO The flames have probably a pretty good idea by now if Smid is going to be on LTIR or if there is a chance he can play. No way Russel would be taking a chance on waiting if Smid wants to and might be able to play this season. If flames think Smid will be on LTIR then they would probably have already signed Russel.

As some other have said, moving bad contracts is one of the hardest thing to do in the NHL. I also can't see Russel waiting along for the hopes that the flames can move a bad contract. I've said it before that i don't think Wideman with his NMC and large salary is tradeable, even eating money. Forget about Stajan being able to be moved. Maybe Bouma if they eat some money. I rather have Bouma at high cap hit on 4th line blocking shots than Russel on D.

I don't believe this rumour at all.
