I think at this point, the Flames shouldn't have to fork out much more than league minimum for Russell over a one or two year deal. Maybe, because the Flames value him as a person and a leader, it can be incentive based.
Scary to think that the Flames and Russell were rumoured to be around a million dollars apart during contract negotiations. If Russell's agent was seeking $5.5 million per year, that means the Flames potentially offered him $4-$4.5 million per year. If true, the Flames sure dodged a bullet considering the rest of the league isn't interested (maybe not interested in the salary demand or term).
Also if true, Kris must feel pretty silly turning down such a gross overpayment for his services from his hometown team.
