What big american market? This is hockey we're talking about. Honestly, Calgary is probably a bigger hockey market than all of the American markets outside of Manhattan and Chicago. Maybe throw LA in there. New Jersey is a struggling market that has trouble selling out. Boston is a decent market but probably comparable to Calgary's, and with a team looking to go nowhere any time soon. Seems to me people are making this into a way bigger thing than it is. Is Camalleri raking in endorsement dollars? Hell, is Ovechkin? What national ad companies is he on? What about Parise, the native son?
This whole thing is about contract dollars. Period. Johnny has a cutthroat agent that wants to maximize earnings. All this other talk is just Canadian inferiority complex.
