The notions that 'my speed is fast enough' or 'the slowest driver should dictate the pace' is so incredibly short sighted, oblivious of traffic flow, and selfish (in the first instance), that I am amazed every time an adult manages to utter them.
If people obey the stay-to-the-right rule, and use the left lane to pass, traffic moves much, much smoother. This is a simple fact, proven all over the planet.
Conversely, drivers clogging the left lane will result in passing to the right, which causes unpredictable and variant behavior and more lane changes in both directions. Obviously, that is far more dangerous.
Another factor is the sheer number of cars on the road. If slower drivers dictate the pace, then average speed declines. If average speed declines, then the average driving time increases (by definition). If the average driving time increases, then the number of cars on the road at a given time increases (by definition). If the number of cars on the road at a given time increases, then it is a safe bet that the number of accidents will increase.
