Just went through the same experience with the neighbours. It is a good ice breaker to talk to them, but there can be some issues that will need to be worked out. Our community has fairly stringent requirements, so it needed to be cedar. One side wanted it extended all the way to the front part of the house (which was useless to me) but I agreed to keep the peace and they compromised on some other stuff.
$3k for half of one side does seem high, but if I could see it if it is an extended length, pricier wood and gate components, and if there are stairs or other stuff done at the same time.
