What's interesting about that Portnoy quote is that he epitomizes it. He's a fantastic drummer, technically advanced no doubt, but he also has a rep of being an out of this world drummer. He isn't. But I cannot think of a drummer who plays the coolest part for any song. His ear is unbelievable. Portnoy is the king of "crowd pleasing" drumming. Linear cross patterns and metric modulation are his bag, and he applies them in ways that most people can't hear to begin with.
