I think Monahan has more 'runway' to improve, actually. I think if he improves his footspeed - something that can be done, something that he has already improved since the draft, and something that he is continuing to work on - he will be a much more difficult player to contain. I also think he has a better shot than Gaudreau does.

Bennett and Monahan are the two guys that I think will experience the biggest gains this upcoming season.

I love Gaudreau - let me emphasize this - I LOVE Gaudreau. I do think he is one of the league's premier offensive talents and will be a staple in the top 10 league scoring for years to come.

Now that I got that out of the way...

I loved Loob. I loved Mullen. I loved Makarov. Give me Nieuwendyk over them any day of the week. That guy helped you win more games.

That is what I see Monahan as. I think offensively, he is being criminally underrated here. Look at who his comparables are in his first 3 years. What the heck does that say about him offensively? Add to the fact that - for his age - he plays a decent defensively game that he continues to work on - and I am just left scratching my head at the last few pages.

There is ZERO reason to expect that Monahan is anywhere closer to hitting his ceiling as Gaudreau is with his. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Monahan become the highest scoring player on the team a few times in his career, and I actually expect Bennett to become the most valuable forward for the Flames in the next few seasons.

I didn't think Monahan had this in him, to be honest. He has not flash in his game - maybe that was partially why. He just gets the job done and he gets it done a lot more differently than Gaudreau does. Who do I enjoy watching more? Gaudreau. Who would I keep if I HAD to choose between the two? I keep Monahan and I don't lose sleep over it. I say this KNOWING that Gaudreau will be in the top 10 of scoring for years to come, and loving the kid. I just think you win more with a guy like Monahan.

But.. I am just glad we have both.

And I am even more glad when the Flames finally have two fairly defined and balanced lines that will make shutting them down on the road a much more difficult task in the seasons to come with Tkachuck- Bennett probably going to be a mighty fine line down the road.

I love Johnny, but I am quite sick of hearing how Johnny has nobody to play with as compared to the other 'superstars' in the league, not to mention he gets to play with the most offensive set of defencemen in the league as well that can always make a really good pass to him. Gaudreau is an exceptional talent, but in no way in hell are the rest of the Flames scrubs who aren't worthy to share the ice with him. They make him better too.
