You can figure out a team's +- per 60 minutes (really per game, but close enough) easily enough. Take the player's TOI/G versus the team +- and you should have an idea of what the expected +- for the player should be. Compare that to the player's individual +-, and you get a relative +-.

I'll rough out the calculations for Giordano.

Flames +- = (GF - PPGF) - (GA - PPGA)
= (229 - 46) - (257 - 57) = -17
+-/60 for the Flames would be roughly -0.207 (-17/82)

Giordano's +- was -5. Based on his TOI/G of 24:47, his expected +- would be -5.138. So his Rel +- is 0.138. Right about where you'd expect.

It still doesn't account for special teams ice time, but it's close enough for a rough approximation for a pretty meaningless stat.
