Examine the facts. Non-point per game player over his career, and he plays the easier position of winger. Slight frame means he can't do certain things that other guys can. He's never going to win you that important face-off.
The Flames only have 2 years of service to evaluate which works against Johnny. If Johnny had play three years so far and had 2 ~80 point seasons, then yes a $7MM AAV with a couple $8MM seasons in there would be warranted.
What If Johnny is actually a 60 point winger for his career? $7MM or $8MM is a massive overpayment.

If this is the position Calgary has taken then it's no wonder he's not signed yet.
If they honestly believe he's a 60 point player, there's a problem. He's already proven to be capable of putting up 80+ points. Players that are doing that are getting paid 8.5M - 10.5M.
