If there is a hard 'Gio-cap', I would assume the rule is that no player's annual salary can exceed Giordano's, but it would not apply to cap-hit/AAV for the full duration of the contract.

Giordano is paid 6.750M in each year of his 6 year contract that begins this season. Interesting to note - Monahan's new deal has 2 years where he earns as much as Giordano, but not a dollar more.
If Johnny is wanting an AAV of 7.000M+, and Flames management has a Gio-cap in place, then the only way around it is a 7 or 8 year deal for Gaudreau.
