Well it's likely both. The longer the term, the more both sides are dipping into their crystal balls to predict just how good Johnny will be at the end of an 8 year term in the back half of his prime.
Johnny's camp likely coming to the table with confidence saying he'll be the best player in the league, and if you want to lock me in for those years, I want to get paid at a level that doesn't translate to the comparables being discussed right now. If they were only trying to agree on a shorter contract, I don't doubt it would be done by now.
