He is a decent regular season player who has not really controlled the outcome of NHL playoff games since the 04 run in my opinion anyway though.

Again, how do you know he had the chance to sign with any team he chose? What if the Avs were the only team offering him a deal?
Look at what happened with Glencross, Hudler and Russell. Vets don't really get re-signed anymore.
