I've heard it described as the Islamicization of radicals. Embittered lost souls, mostly young men, looking for some kind of meaning - something powerful and inspiring - and finding a ready-made online domain of Islamic terrorism that preaches an enticing credo of taking back agency and showing the establishment how much damage one man can do.
Radical Islam is part of the problem. Religion is a tried-and-true vehicle for engaging the lonely and disaffected. But the rogue male phenomenon, and power of online media to stoke violence, are big parts too.
