They don't have the votes of the center, because the center has only been vacated in re: Trump. If they don't move in and build a house there - as they're doing - the GOP can come back in 4 years with someone like Kasich and take back their share of it and Trump can be dismissed as an anomaly.
Someone's going to claim that ground. Right now it looks more likely to be the Democratic party, simply because Bernie notwithstanding, they're less of a shambles than the GOP.
