Default American Corn Pops

We've got the thread about the Coffee Crisp but that reminded me about American Corn Pops. Does anybody know why they are so different here in Canada? Here in Canada, we have large dry balls of roof-of-mouth ripping balls of hard corn meal.

In the US, they have smaller, football shapped nuggets of corn meal that have more air in them and are more overall glazed with a sugary goodness. I always buy a box of American corn pops when I'm in the states and I can't figure out why Canadian corn pops - even the generic brands are all the way they are and not the way the American ones are.
