I don't think it is all about up front money either. Lots of times the first movie sets the box office standard for the second one. I have to think people are only going to give DC so many chances before they finally give up and stop going.

Then again the transformers movies (among others) have been repeatedly bashed by critics and fans alike and yet keep making buckets of money, so who knows.

Zack Snyder needs to get far away from these movies.

I think Suicide Squad was lucky that people didn't have too many preconceived notions about the characters. One of the biggest complaints seems to be Leto's joker because he's one of the few characters people actually know. The rest are only really being dissected by fans. And even then Suicide Squad isn't that crazy popular. They have more in common with Guardians than they do with the Avengers in terms of widespread popularity.
