This is a rather incredible claim on your part. By the same rationale, virtually every donation ever made public must also be a matter of pure self promotion, and I refuse to accept that. Even for those people who are narcissistic enough to prioritise their public image in the case of donating large sums of money, there is in every charitable act
some underlying sense of providing for the benefit of others.
I tend to think more often than not criticisms of beneficent actions are grounded in some underlying—occasionally unspoken and often subconscious dislike for the philanthropist that is unrelated to her/his philanthropy. In other words, you disliked Subban before you ever learned about his incredible act of generosity, and these prior feelings are colouring your evaluations of his subsequent actions.

Dude's a wildcard on the ice (selfish) and off and his former team knows it. The amount of PK love on this forum actually kind off surprises me.

Are you really surprised? He is the most colourful figure to play in the NHL in a fairly long time, and he carries himself extremely well in public, which results in a sadly rare combination of charisma and genuineness.
The popularity of Subban is no mystery. For my part, I think his relocation to a non-traditional but strong hockey market like Nashville could be one of the best things to happen to the League in a very long time.
