There seem to be many cautionary tales. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood from the Cubs and then now Matt Harvey from the Mets.

Conversely the Nats shut down Strasburg a couple of years ago and he's still an ace.

Whether these are anecdotal or not, teams are not going to burn a future ace for a few extra games, it's just not worth it. Not to mention the Jays' pen is a dumpster fire.
