- Im positive his friend is an illusion. In the scene where he throws the basketball away and then leaves, people start to move away from Elliot even though it appeared like he was just quietly sitting there. So it was probably him that actually picked up the ball and caused the scene.

there's a reason why they had shown a scene where Elliot reaches for the gun in the popcorn machine when Tyler was at the arcade. After the FBI finding the shell of a bullet, it's confirmed to me now that Elliot used the gun and killed Tyler. Tyler's "voice" on the phone was actually in Elliot's head. Mr. Robot doesnt want to reveal to Elliot that he's dead because he'll know it'll destroy him knowing that he's a murderer, which is why both Mr. Robot and "Tyler" is protecting Tyler's whereabouts. I hope I'm wrong but this seems to be the most plausible theory to me
