They were serving a warrant on a man who's last known address was that place? I've read too many stories like this, you'd think that it wouldn't be that hard to pull bill records from the utilities companies or there has to be other ways to verify who's there.
Was the dog loose in the front yard? Did it act aggressively like the police said, because then I can understand a police officers right to protect himself from an aggressive dog.
But overall optically this is a terrible story and I feel bad for the kids.

Looks like they had a fenced front yard so the dog was probably on the loose in the yard. As such, if the cop feels that it could become a threatening or dangerous situation he shouldn't be entering the yard.
