Ending the 2 party system is contingent on ending the electoral college. Otherwise a 4 or 5 party system likely totally splits the electoral college so no one can win it outright. And then Congress gets to choose the President. This is where all that GOP gerrymandering sets them up to dominate the White House as there are more parties. So I'm not sure if the electoral college can be eliminated, but if it can't then the 2 party system is likely to persist forever.
