This issue is actually not as uncommon as you think. It would appear several people have an issue with their router showing no Link or no connection to the Hitron.

I know my Asus N56u says its not connected to the Hitron all the time and will only find the connection on a reboot or refresh. Oddly enough my Asus N66u does not display this issue so I have been using it as my main Router and the 56u as an AP.

If you are in the Market for another router I would suggest something that can run modified firmware like advanced tomato or Padavan. These custom firmwares take out the bloat and make vast improvements over the originals. The n66u is probably the best sub $100 router out there if you do not have AC devices in your home.
