I know, it's basically for non-rational reasons, you said that already. I can't really fault that while driving a 40 year old Datsun. I just do not understand what this non-rational allure consists of.

SUVs are quite useless when you compare to a truck. Can't put anything in them. Not sure what the OPs family situation is, but if kids are in play, especially boys you can expect to haul bikes, dirt bikes etc.
If fuel economy is a concern, the new F150 offers a 2.7L turbo ecoboost which is plenty powerful and is decent on gas.
