I'm not even sure I would use an N750 rated router. Or any N based router.

If you're going to use your own router, it's only good if the router you use is "better" than the one they use, and I'd suspect the hitron is better than anything not at minimum a 1300AC router. The one you have is 5+ years old. If you want to use your own, upgrade to any of the 1300, 1900, 2700, 3200+ routers, but anything over 1900 is overkill because they just add additional 5gHz channels, so you're not getting 1300+1300=2600, you're getting 1300 and another channel of 1300.

The signal strength and throughput of the new routers is far superior. So think about "why" you want to use your own router. If it's just because that's what everyone else does? Because everyone says the ISP routers are no good? Or because you actually have your own QoS settings, or firewalls, or use your port assignments uniquely? If you do none of that, and its just because of what people say, then don't bother, the hitron will be just fine!
Thanks for the reply. I think I'll just get Shaw to enable the wifi on the Hitron and just use it.

I originally bought the router because my old Shaw modem/router sucked. I got dropouts all the time and the wifi speed wasn't great, so I tried using my own router and it fixed those problems. There's no real reason for me to keep using it other than the idea of having two separate units doing two separate duties, instead of one doing double-duty, but it sounds like it shouldn't matter anyways.
