Fellow colored team mates did the same and defeated my crappy 100-200CP pokemon to buffer up the gym. Hilarious part was I was getting EXP defeating my own pokemon in the gym I had taken over. Unless I missed something.  |
You weren't 'defeating' your own Pokemon guarding the gym, you were training the ones you were fighting with. This raises the prestige of the gym, allowing for more Pokemon to guard it.
