Just looking at the western teams and what they have done in the off season to their pathetic teams that finished off 2015-16
Flames
add
Brouwer - makes any line he plays on better than what the same line was last year!
Elliott - very much better than what the Flames had last year . In 2014-15 was identical statswise to Hiller. A bit worried that all St. L. could get for him was a 2nd round pick and they could have kept him if they wanted him.
Johnson - played well on a non-playoff team - he might have a better temperament to succeed on the Flames than the hyper-competitive intense Elliott
Chaisson - players you need to fill in the roster.... replaces Jones
Vey - lack of depth in the Flames system ...
Hathaway - needed when Bouma is hurt and provides ability to bench Ferland
Bouma - lot of whining about his 2m contact but was missed last year and was brought back at somewhat less than 100% in the playoffs.
Jokipakka - what we wanted Wotherspoon to develop into.
Wideman - missed 31 games ... played far better than expected when Gio was hurt in 2014-15.
out
Russell - was able to play well with Hamilton... Gio and Brodie's own game fell off when paired with Hamilton
Hudler - was the #1 RW until he was traded
Colborne - leaves a hole in the top 6.
Jones - NHL quality middle 6 that provided some heft... way overpaid
Jooris - not big enough or gritty enough for his bottom 6 role.
Hiller, Ramo, Ortio -- awful year. Chicken or egg... the team started off poorly and the goalies never got their mojo back.

Canucks
in
Eriksson
Elder
Gudbrandson
Brandon Sutter
Gaunce
Larsen
Granlund
out
Vrbata
Vey
Hamhuis
Bartkowski
McCann
Weber
Just after the all star break when Elder went down the Canucks were 2 pts out of the playoffs..... they fell apart like I thought the Flames would have when Gio got hurt 2 years ago.
adding Elder and Gundbrandson and Eriksson and Sutter to the team that finished last year is significant. That is their top 2 d and 2 forwards into their top 6. Will the Sedins have a dead cat bounce as their careers wind down? The moves they made means they think they are a playoff team until the Sedins pack it in.
------------
Oilers
in
Lucic
McDavid
Puljujarvi
Maroon
Larrson
Klefbom
out
Hall
Purcell
Korpikoski
Shultz
Yikes.... of the 6 players the Oilers are adding there is not one (not taking into account contracts) that I wouldn't want on the Flames....
The only thing keeping the Oilers out of the playoffs is the Lowe/Mctavish curse.
----------------
Jets
in
Laine
Connor
Mattias
Dano
Strait
Hellebuyck
out
Ladd
Halischuk
Connor might not make the Jets out of training camp. Morrissey might. If Laine moves across at the level he was at the World Championships the Jets make the playoffs.
The Lottery win for the Jets is a game changer in the standings... Tkachuk for Laine and the Flames would be a lock for the playoffs.
