Monahan: Contract extension is "getting there"

Quote:
Calgary Flames forward Sean Monahan was on TSN on Monday morning.
On how close his camp and the Flames are on a contract extension:
“It’s getting there. It’s a process. The deal has to work on both ends, and obviously I want to be in Calgary. I’m just looking forward to getting it done and hopefully it gets done here soon.”
On if he’d prefer a bridge deal, or a longer-term contract:
“I definitely want to be there for a long time. I would prefer a longer-term contract, but that’s not up for me to decide. I want to be there. I want to be in Calgary for the rest of my career, so that’s something I’m looking forward to doing.”
On if he’s talking much with teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who is in a similar contract situation:
“Yeah, we talk a little bit. We’re in the same situation. We’re good friends. It’s something that we do talk about and I’m actually going to be seeing him tonight, so we’ll have a little chat and we’ll go from there. It’s not something that we’re battling about or anything like that. We both want to be there. We both want to play together. We want to win in Calgary.”
On how Steven Stamkos took less on his contract to help his team, and if we’ve entered that era of the NHL where players want to take a little bit less to allow the GM to bring in other guys in order to win:
“Yeah, for sure. If you’re a high-end player and you’re playing somewhere at a young age, that’s where your heart is and that’s where you want to win. Our goal is to bring a Stanley Cup to Calgary. If that’s what it is that we can bring other players in to have a little extra I guess money room and get them in to help us to be a better team, I think that’s the idea.”
