The Habs are one of the richest clubs in the league. There is no chance the move had anything to do with the actual dollars owed to PK. You could argue for cap savings, but the Canadiens could care less about the money owed. If there was no salary cap in the NHL, Montreal would probably spend over 100 million per year on it's roster.
