Pingo is basically an ice/dirt mound. They start from a small lake that has drained/driied out. Because the dirt is lighter, it warms up and melts the permafrost below. It then freezes, and expands, as ice does. This process repeats, and over the years it rises, up to I think 17cm a year. There are over 1000 of them in the area.
