Mostly I just try to stay relatively out of sight as I push heals or buffs on people. I find what separates a good Mercy player from an average one is knowing when to whip out that pistol and throw some damage down. It's actually not a terrible gun, quite accurate and decent range. I've saved my team's ass before because no one expects the Mercy to turn around and start firing.
